How does someone earn or keep power?

I think someone can earn power by working hard at their job and doing a good job,and someone that has is in a higher position than you or somebody else. For example, if you work at a restaurant as a waitress and you work hard and you do a good job every time you work, you could get moved up to a manager position. Therefore, earning power is a good thing to do it makes you push for something you want. If, you have a good job that you like and you want to keep it or in other words staying in the same position that's when you keep power. If you are keeping power you will keep the same position. As long as you are keeping power you are staying the same as you are doing, or working the same all the time and not having any new goals.
